Pituk, József Divine Comedy (graphics)

József Viktorián Pituk was born in 1906 in Selmecbánya. At the Hungarian Academy of Fine Arts, he studied under Oszkár Glatz and received his diploma in 1932. During his career, he received two major awards: in 1943, the Graphic Art Prize of the City of Budapest, and in 1975, in Milan, where he exhibited oil paintings, etchings, photographs of his stained-glass windows, and his ink drawings for Dante’s work as part of a solo exhibition. For this exhibition, he was awarded the Gran Premio, equivalent to the Grand Prize.

József Pituk held many exhibitions both in Hungary and abroad. He was also a brilliant painter, using colour boldly and applying paint to the canvas with broad, confident brushwork. His stained-glass windows can also be admired in the Chapel of the Holy Right Hand in St Stephen’s Basilica, in the Church of Perpetual Adoration in Budapest, and in the Holy Cross Parish Church in Kaposvár.
