Description and further information

The hinged lid of the rectangular box is embossed with a mythological scene, The Choice of Hercules, framed by rocaille ornament. Hercules, seated on the right, is flanked by the armed Minerva, representing the virtuous life, and Venus, personifying sensual pleasure. The sides of the box are decorated with shell motifs.
