Of the six surviving panels belonging to the former winged altarpiece of the chapel of the Holy Blood, two—Vir Dolorum (55.91) and the Fourteen Holy Helpers (55.92)—adorned the feast-day side. In accordance with the dedication of the chapel and its altarpiece, the paintings, too, clearly belonged to a series associated with the cult of the Holy Blood. The two works, however, do not provide enough information to reconstruct the iconographic program of the inner side of the altarpiece. The outer side presented episodes from the Passion (55.93; 55.94; 55.95; 55.96). Historical information concerning the altarpiece is summed up in a clear manner in the panel painting portraying the Vir Dolorum. The inscription on the right and the coat of arms beneath it, displaying the prelate’s rank, unequivocally identify the donor kneeling before Christ as Abbot János, the known head of the abbey of Garamszentbenedek from the 1480s onwards and its rejuvenator at the end of the 15th century. His name is associated not only with the re-consecration of the church’s altarpieces, but also with the acquiring of the relic of the Holy Blood, the renovations of the chapel above the sacristy, and the placement and veneration of the relic there. Obviously, the establishment of the altar dedicated to the Holy Blood and its furnishing with the present altarpiece is also connected to these developments. The Vir Dolorum painting accordingly shows Abbot János raising the Holy Blood reliquary in order to catch the blood flowing directly from Christ’s side wounds. Art historical tradition holds that the building in the background is the abbey.

The panels were acquired by János Simor from the abbey church of Garamszentbenedek prior to 1875.
