Legend of St Ursula and the Eleven Thousand Companions

At the center of the crowded composition, Ursula, kneels in an elegant dress, keeping with the fashion of the Low Countries of the time, the ornate hem of which is adorned with an inscription imploring the saint’s intercession. According to the legend, the Huns who had captured the city of Cologne slaughtered Ursula and her companions upon their arrival. In our painting, the leader of the Huns leans forward from the back of a richly harnessed white horse; clad in elegant armor, he stabs the girl in the heart with a spear-like weapon. On the other side of Ursula, her companions are being beheaded; in the background, the virgins are stepping ashore from the ship, while a soldier armed with a halberd accompanies the clergymen who arrived with the virgins. The scene takes place in front of a waterside town surrounded by a medieval city wall; however, this is not a realistic depiction of a city. The painting may be the work of a Brussels painter influenced by Bernard van Orley, originally a wing panel of an altarpiece. (S.N.E, 2026)
