Description and further information

The drinking vessel stands on three spherical feet. The sides of its slightly flaring cylindrical body are decorated with three rounded oval medallions containing profile portraits of Roman statesmen, including Marcus Tullius Cicero and Gnaeus Pompeius Magnus. Similar portrait medallions depicting Publius Septimius Geta and Marcus Salvius Otho appear on the lid, which is further embellished with representations of fruit. The lid is surmounted by a spherical finial echoing the form of the feet.
