The panel was the companion to the painting showing the burning at the stake of the scholars converted by St. Catherine (55.84). This is corroborated by the presence on the reverse of each panel of elements that together form an Annunciation depiction.
Provenance
Ipolyi Collection. ‘125. Female saint among scholars and a king seated on a throne (St. Catherine?). Early 16th c. Panel.’ (Lakatos-Balla 277). Some reports indicate the panels were acquired in the border region of Sáros and Szepes counties (?)
