The Visitation; on the reverse: the Flagellation of Christ

Originally this work was a wing panel of one of the altarpieces belonging to the abbey of Garamszentbenedek, and its companion was panel 55.89 showing the Annunciation/Christ on the Mount of Olives. The compositions on the former inner side were based on Dürer’s engravings B19 and B84.

The outer sides were significantly overpainted in the 19th century, but this was partially removed during restoration.

Provenance

János Simor bought the paintings from the abbey church of Garamszentbenedek.
