Heroic head

In 1496, Amico Aspertini made a large number of drawings in Rome after ancient sculptures and reliefs. His archaeological interests were amply nourished in his native city, Bologna, famed for its university, where the intellectual elite passionately collected works of art that evoked historical and literary associations.

This monochrome painting, made around 1503–1504 and imitating a relief, likewise pays homage to a heroic past. It may have belonged to a series of Famous Men (Uomini famosi), fashionable at the time. The humanist subject, however, is rendered by this artist of bizarre imagination in a manner far removed from classical harmony. The face of the melancholic man with the high forehead is irregular; the curling locks of hair, the ribbon fluttering at the nape of the neck, and the calligraphic drapery of the toga all suggest a sense of restlessness.

At first, we may not even notice that the bust does not appear within the carved stone frame, but in front of it — yet this invention plays a major role in the image’s suggestive power. With an almost diabolical skill of conjuring spirits, the painted relief comes to life.
