Muses

Among the inscribed female figures on this fragmentarily preserved tapestry (Bildteppich, Wandteppich), three Muses can be identified in the foreground, framed by Renaissance and Gothic architectural motifs.Terpsichore is shown full-length, playing a lute. In Greek mythology, she is the Muse of dance. Polyhymnia, the Muse of sacred hymns, plays a portative organ. Melpomene, the Muse of tragedy, holds an open book in her hands. Beside her, part of a fourth female figure is also visible, but neither an inscription nor an attribute assists in her identification.
