The Triumph of the Holy Trinity

The tapestry depicts an allegorical triumphal procession. The Holy Trinity approaches frontally in an ornate triumphal chariot, personified by three identical male figures. All three wear the same garments and crowns. Each holds an orb in his left hand and raises his right hand in blessing. The Trinity is surrounded by cherubim forming a fiery mandorla. The triumphal chariot is drawn by the symbols of the four Evangelists: the ox of Saint Luke and the lion of Saint Mark, with the angel of Saint Matthew and the eagle of Saint John above them. Groups of saints flank the scene. On the left, Saint Peter can be identified by his attribute, the key held in his hand. Small clouds billow above the two groups. The border of the tapestry is damaged, although a section survives at the top, where it is not sharply separated from the principal scene. Beneath the border on the left is the inscription TRINITAS OMNIA VINCIT, meaning “The Trinity Conquers All.”
