Triumph of the Time

When Bishop Arnold Ipolyi acquired this piece from an art dealer, he almost certainly purchased a surviving fragment of a much larger tapestry. At the top and bottom, strips from another tapestry were sewn on as borders. The remaining woven band running around it was added later during museum conservation. In the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, aristocratic audiences could encounter similar scenes not only in visual representations but also in costumed processions. The scenarios and iconographic programmes of such representations were inspired by works of classical and Renaissance authors. Here, the personified female figure of Time (Tempus) proceeds triumphantly. She holds a clock in her hand, and her speed is suggested by the flowing movement of her long, wind-swept hair. Behind her appears a section of the sky with several signs of the zodiac. Beside the triumphal chariot of Time walk four of the principal deities of Roman mythology, richly attired in Renaissance costume: Mars, Venus, Mercury and Phoebus (Apollo). (Ildikó Kontsek, 2015)
