St. Catherine of Alexandria. Feast-day side of an altarpiece wing

The panel painted on both sides originally belonged to the movable wing of a winged altarpiece, along with its companion panel (55.44 [45]). The depictions of St. Catherine and St. Barbara occupied the feast-day side of the wing, while Gabriel and the scene showing Mary receiving the Lord’s message adorned the workday side. The two panels had been framed together with the panel catalogued number 54.2 in the Christian Museum to form an antependium at the time they were discovered by Kornél Divald in the parish church of Bát. Because of their new role as part of the antependium, the panels had been trimmed so their height matched that of the altar stone. The master responsible for the work may have been a member of the workshop named for the St. Nicholas Altar in Jánosrét.

Provenance

Roman Catholic church of Bát(?) The panels showing St. Catherine of Alexandria and St. Barbara (55.44, 55.55) were framed together with another panel of St. Catherine of Alexandria (54.2). They were assigned a new function as an antependium in their new location in the church of Bát. Their original place of usage, however, is unknown. They were purchased by Prince Primate János Csernoch in 1916.
