Description and further information

In this image, which departs from traditional representations of the Resurrection, a richly varied composition unfolds on either side of the central vertical axis, arranged in an almost mirror-like structure. The colour scheme, characterised by a wide range of tones, the alternation of dark and light surfaces, the painted framing band, and the similarly broad dividing axis gradually lead the viewer into the realm ofutonomous artistic expression. Slowly, the form of a tree begins to emerge before our eyes: its trunk opens towards us, while at its roots a crumpled drapery rises from a box-like opening, then dissolves like smoke as it ascends. Among the diagonally spreading furrows to the right and left, a bird-like figure is concealed on each side. The arc of the visual narrative leads from the Crucifixion through the Entombment to the Ascension of Christ, if we take into account the signs referring to these scenes: the wood of the Cross, the blood-stained and snow-white cloths, and the airy, upward-swirling movement. The thick layer of paint applied to the surface evokes the velvety soft, dense texture of fallen leaves and moss. The beings living within the density of the created world — here, birds — appear as participants in the mysterious order of the divine plan. (Ildikó Kontsek)
