Description and further information

According to the museum’s catalogue published in 1964, the panel depicting the Death of the Virgin originally belonged to the same winged altarpiece as panels numbered 56.514, 56.515, 56.516 and 56.517 in the Christian Museum’s inventory, which displayed two scenes from the life of St. Nicholas and a pair of male and female saints. However, several factors undermine this supposition: the four paintings from the wings of the altarpiece do not fit with the large central image in terms of subject, style or size. The gold background of this image of the Death of Mary is completely missing; on the back, traces of a painted vine decoration can be discerned.

Provenance:
Ipolyi Collection. ’98. Death of Mary. Painting on panel, renewed gold sheet. Rough, poorly delineated image from the late 15th c.’ (Lakatos-Balla 291)

Restoration:
Traces of early (19th century?) restoration efforts can be seen.

A képen korai (19. századi?) beavatkozások nyomai látszanak.
