In the Artist’s Studio

In 1870, a large side-altarpiece for the Basilica remained unfinished owing to the painter’s death. Ludwig Mayer of Vienna was invited to complete the painting. This studio scene was created around that time and shows Mayer himself receiving visitors. From the mid-19th century onward, the studio visit and conversation with connoisseurs became a frequent subject of social life as well as of painting. Here, those gathered around the monumental canvas depicting the Crucifixion are the very people called upon to judge the artistic and material value of the sacred image.The academically trained artist painted altarpieces for several churches in Austria, and created his major works in the 1880s.
