Description and further information
In 1875, the year the Christian Museum opened, János Simor acquired this work by the popular Austrian Biedermeier painter. The idyllic scene focuses on the intimate bond between mother and child. The intensity of the colours, together with the sharp contrast between light and darkness, is characteristic of this much-admired style and of its choice of subjects drawn from the intimacy of everyday life. Such sentimental scenes often carry an unmistakably moralising message. Through the strongly illuminated figures emerging from the dark background, the painter directs the viewer’s attention towards human happiness. (Kontsek Ildikó)
