Description and further information

Mary’s pose repeats that of the Muse of Poetry depicted by Raphael in the ceiling fresco of one of the Vatican Stanze. The painter copied it after Marcantonio Raimondi’s engraving; compare especially the position of the left hand, which differs from Raphael’s fresco:

According to a note by Károly Back, Bernát Back purchased the painting from Sigmund Röhrer in Munich. For a time, the painting was exhibited in the Alte Pinakothek, Munich, with an attribution to Cesare da Sesto. Károly Back considered it possibly to be a work by Leonardo.

Provenance

Gift of Károly Back, 1973. Earlier provenance: Sigmund Röhrer, Munich, late 19th century; Bernát Back Collection, Szeged, late 19th century; on deposit at the Museum of Fine Arts, Budapest, 1919.
