Nativity

The light radiating from the Christ Child almost transfigures the angel hovering above the manger, absorbing him into itself with overwhelming force; the heavenly messenger, painted in glowing white, flickering forms, is the most beautiful and inspired participant in the scene. Beside him, the earthly figures of the story appear not only overly worldly, but also reveal less painterly imagination: Mary, who looks upon her child with reverence rather than tenderness; Joseph, resting in the background with languid indifference; and the two awkward, awestruck shepherds. Their humble, everyday character is matched by the simple gifts: a basket of eggs, and the two brooding hens sitting in the basket placed at the centre of the foreground. Enikő Buzási, 1993.
