Christ on the Mount of Olives

The four paintings occupied the lower register of the workday side of the main altarpiece of the Church of St. Catherine. The versos of the depictions of Christ Carrying the Cross and the Crucifixion bear traces of the relief compositions that adorned the feast-day side of movable wings. In the upper right corner on the reverse of the Resurrection panel, a sketch of perhaps the beheading of St. Catherine can be observed.

Miklós Mojzer identified Master M.S. as Marten Swarcz, who arrived in Cracow with Veit Stoss and worked there as a painter.

Provenance

The altarpiece of St. Catherine was disassembled during the 18th century and the panels scattered. The four paintings in the Christian Museum were purchased by János Simor from the prince of Koháry-Coburg prior to 1891.
